Resistance in Shigella spp. and Modern Approaches to Antimicrobial Therapy of Shigellosis

A variety of resistance mechanisms and free transfer of resistance genes whithin a gender as well as among Enterobacteriaceae lead to a number of problems in the choice of antibacterial therapy of shigellosis. Many conventional antimicrobials used …

The Etiology of Acute Bacterial Sinusitis. Results of SSSR Multicenter Microbiological Study

Materials and Methods. The aim of the study was to determine the structure of bacterial pathogens and their antimicrobial resistance in adult patients with acute maxillary sinusitis. A total of 311 strains isolated from 442 adult patients with acute maxillary sinusitis were included in the study during 2000–2003. Results. Clinically significant bacterial pathogens were isolated in 65.4% of patients; among them single microorganism were found in 87.3% of cases, >2 – in 12.

Trends in the Prevalence and Susceptibility of ESBL-producing Entererobacteriaceae to Various Antimicrobial Agents in Russian ICUs

The prevalence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) production in nosocomial Enterobacteriaceae isolated in ICUs of various regions of Russia in 1997–1998 and 2003 was studied. We report the dramatic increase in the incidence of ESBLs, attributed …

Epidemiology of Candidiasis Causative Agents and Their Susceptibility to Azoles: Results of ARTEMIS Disk Study in Russia

In 2003 8 research centers in Russia from Ekaterinburg, Irkutsk, Krasnodar, Novosibirsk, Moscow, St. Petersburg and Smolensk took part in ARTEMIS Disk study 2003, the main purpose of which was the monitoring of resistance of the clinically …

Prevention of the Selection of Resistant Staphylococci in an in vitro Dynamic Model that Simulates Fluoroquinolone Pharmacokinetics

To study the hypothesis of the mutant selection window (MSW) in a pharmacodynamic context, the susceptibility of a clinical isolate of methicillin-resistant Stap. hylococcus aureus exposed to moxifloxacin (MOX), levofloxacin (LEV) and ciprofloxacin …

In vitro Antimicrobial Resistance of Chlamydia trachomatis: Methodological Aspects and Clinical Significance

Susceptibility of 25 clinical isolates of Chlamydia trachomatis to the most commonly used antimicrobials for the treatment of chlamydial infections was studied. Of 25 isolates, 10 were determined as in vitro resistant to doxycycline, 10 – to …

Comparative Activity of Antipseudomonal Antibiotics Against Nosocomial Strains of P. aeruginosa in Russian ICUs

In vitro susceptibility study of nosocomial strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from patients with nosocomial infections in 21 Russian ICUs was performed. Antibiotics with antipseudomonal activity, such as piperacillin, …
