Epidemiology of Antimicrobial Resistance of Nosocomial Strains of Staphylococcus aureus in Russia: Results of Prospective Multicenter Study

Objective. To determine in vitro activity of antimicrobials against S. aureus isolated from hospitalized patients from different regions of Russia. Materials and Methods. A total of 879 clinical strains of S. aureus isolated in 2000–2001 from patients hospitalized in 17medical institutions in different parts of Russia. Susceptibility to 18 antimicrobials: oxacillin, vancomycin, teicoplanin, linezolid, erythromycin, clindamycin, lincomycin, gentamicin, mupirocin, fusidic acid, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, quinupristin/dalfopristin, rifampicin, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, tetracycline, chloramphenicol was determined by agar dilution method in accordance with the NCCLS recommendations.

Antimicrobial Resistance of Streptococcus Pneumoniae in Different Regions of Russia: Results of Prospective Multicentre Study (phase А of project PeHAS-I)

Objective. To determine the structure of antimicrobial resistance of clinical isolates of pneumococci in different regions of Russia. Materials and Methods. A total of 210 Streptococcus pneumoniae strains isolated in 15 centres of Central (Moscow – 5 centers, Kazan, Nizniy Novgorod, Ryzan), North-Western (Smolensk, Saint-Petersburg), Southern (Krasnodar) regions, Urals (Ekaterinburg) and Siberia (Novosibirsk, Tomsk) were included in this study. Susceptibility to 19 antimicrobials – penicillin G, amoxicillin, amoxicillin/clavulanate, cefotaxime, cefepime, erythromycin, azithromycin, clarithromycin, midecamycin, midecamycin acetate, spiramycin, clindamycin, tetracycline, ciprofloxacin, levolfloxacin, chloramphenicol, co-trimoxazole, rifampicin and vancomycin – was determined by broth microdilution in accordance with NCCLS recommendations.

Susceptibility of Staphylococcus aureus from Hospitalised Patients to Topical Antimicrobials in Russia

Objective. To determine in vitro activity of fusidic acid and other antimicrobials available for topical use against S. aureus isolated from hospitalised patients. Materials and Methods. A total of 879 clinical strains of S. aureus isolated in 2000-2001 from patients hospitalised in 17 medical institutions in different parts of Russia - 4 in Central region, 2 in North-West region, 3 in South region, 2 in Volga region, 3 in Ural region, 3 in Siberian region, were included in the study.

Acute Bacterial Rhinosinusitis: Current Approaches to the Diagnostic and Antibacterial Therapy in Outpatient Settings

Acute rhinosinusitis is one of the most common disorders in otolaryngology and is on 5th place among all diseases based on the amount of all prescribed antimicrobials. But a number of problems in the antimicrobial therapy of this pathology still …

Resultst of the Multicentre study of Nasopharyngeal Isolates of Haemophilus influenzae from Healthy Children in Day-Care Centers

The rates of nasopharyngeal carriage of Haemophilus influenzae and epidemiology of its antimicrobial resistance in healthy children from day-care centers have been investigated. The overall rate of nasopharyngeal H.influenzae carriage was 44%. The …

Specificities of The Susceptibility Testing by Disk-Diffusion Method

The approach to administration of antimicrobials is often based on the results of microbiological studies that include microorganism isolation, identification and, most important, susceptibility testing. Majority of microbiological laboratories in …

Role of Fusidic Acid in Clinical Practice

The widespread of multy-resistant Gram-positive pathogens, especially methicillin-resistant staphylococci made us to reconsider our attitude to such an «old» drug as fusidic acid and to draw attention to its usefulness in therapy of the …

β-Lactamases of Aerobic Gram-Negative Bacteria: Description, Principles of Classification, Methods of Detection and Typing

β-Lactamases are represented by extensive range of genetically and functionally different enzymes that are able to destroy β-lactams that leads to development of resistance to these antibiotics in β-lactamases producing bacteria. Intrinsic production …
