β-Lactam/β-Lactamase Inhibitor Combinations: Role in the Antimicrobial Therapy

At present, β-lactams are the most commonly used antimicrobials, but their clinical efficacy may be reduced because of the spread of antimicrobial resistance. The most important mechanism of resistance to β-lactams is an inhibition by the microbial …

Resistance in Shigella spp. and Modern Approaches to Antimicrobial Therapy of Shigellosis

A variety of resistance mechanisms and free transfer of resistance genes whithin a gender as well as among Enterobacteriaceae lead to a number of problems in the choice of antibacterial therapy of shigellosis. Many conventional antimicrobials used …

The Etiology of Acute Bacterial Sinusitis. Results of SSSR Multicenter Microbiological Study

Materials and Methods. The aim of the study was to determine the structure of bacterial pathogens and their antimicrobial resistance in adult patients with acute maxillary sinusitis. A total of 311 strains isolated from 442 adult patients with acute maxillary sinusitis were included in the study during 2000–2003. Results. Clinically significant bacterial pathogens were isolated in 65.4% of patients; among them single microorganism were found in 87.3% of cases, >2 – in 12.

Infections Caused by Nonfermenting Gram-negative Rods: Epidemiological, Microbiological and Clinical Features

Nonfermenting gram-negative rods (NGR) are one of the leading nosocomial pathogens. Among them Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter spp., Burkholderia spp., Stenotrophomonas spp., and Chryseobacterium …

Bacterial Infection in COPD-Patients with Acute Respiratory Failure

To study the microbial and susceptibility patterns in COPD patients with acute respiratory failure (ARF) we performed a prospective cohort study in patients with ARF admitted to our acute care hospital. Quantitative cultures of expectorated sputum or …

Use of fosfomycin trometamol in the Treatment of Lower Urinary Tract Infections

In the treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infec-tions the following groups of antimicrobial are of clinical use: fluoroquinolones, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, nitrofurantoin, fosfomycin (one dose). In uncomplicated acute cystitis the short …

Current State of Enteric Fever

In developed countries as well as in Russia enteric fever occurs rarely, whereas several areas in the world are still endemic. At present, prevalence of resistance to most of conventional antimicrobials in Salmonella enterica serotype Typhi is …

Community-Acquired MRSA – New Problem of Antimicrobial Resistance

Staphylococcus aureus remains one of the most important human pathogens. Special attention is paid to a new problem – emerging and spreading of methicillin$ resistant strains of S. aureus in the community (CAMRSA). The main differences between …

Current Views on the Therapy of Enterococcal Endocarditis

The recent approaches to the treatment of endocarditis caused by Enterococcus spp., including strains that are resistant to conventional therapy, are discussed in the article. The possible ways of reduction of nephrotoxicity in elder patients and in …
