Antimicrobial Resistance of Clinical Isolates of Streptococci Group C and G

We tested antimicrobial susceptibility of retrospective collection of clinical strains group С and G streptococci (69 strains including 58 strains of Streptococcus dysgalactiae subspecies equisimilis and 11 strains of Streptococcus anginosus). …

Fluoroquinolone Resistance of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Novosibirsk Region: Results of Population-Based Study

Objective. Objectives. To study incidence and changes of fluoroquinolone resistance among Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Novosibirsk region, and to determine fluoroquinolone contribution to drug resistance selection in M. tuberculosis population. Materials and Methods. A total of 344 clinical isolates of M. tuberculosis obtained from patients with newly diagnosed tuberculosis during the periods of 2000–2002 and 2006–2010 were tested for susceptibility to fluoroquinolones. This study included 141 isolates susceptible to first-line drugs and 83 isolates resistant to isoniazid and rifampicin (multi-drug resistance [MDR]), and 120 isolates resistant to one or more anti-TB drugs, but without MDR.

Phenotypic and Genetic Characteristics of Pathogens Causing Burn Wound Infections

The analysis of the results of infectious agents present on a wound was performed and the leading role of staphylococcus was revealed in the burn centre of Nizhny Novgorod Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedics during the period of …

Antimicrobial Resistance of the Respiratory Strains of Streptococcus pyogenes in Russia During 1999–2009

Objective. Objectives. To evaluate the level, structure and phenotypes of antimicrobial resistance in clinical respiratory strains of Streptococcus pyogenes in different regions of Russia during 1999–2009. Materials and Methods. In total 804 respiratory strains of S. pyogenes from different regions of Russia were included in the study. Susceptibility to 18 antimicrobials was evaluated by the standard broth microdilution method according to EUCAST 2012 recommendations. Results. β-Lactams remaine highly active against all tested strains.

A New Method for Evaluation of Antimicrobial Resistance of Bacteria in Biofilms

At the present article we evaluate a relatively new method of the evaluation of activity of antimicrobials against bacterial biofilms. This method combines the possibilities of simultaneous evaluation of bacterial survival in biofilm in the presence …

Independent Acquisition of Quinolone Resistance in Clonally Related Nosocomial Strains of Salmonella Typhimurium Due to Hypermutability

Here we report on a high incidence of quinolone resistance (43,1%) among nosocomial CTX-M-5 ESBLproducing S. Typhimurium isolates belonging to a single clonal group isolated in Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan. The resistance mechanism in all cases …

Antimicrobial Resistance of Bacteria in Biofilms

Different mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance development in biofilm bacteria are reviewed in the article. Practical approaches to the susceptibility testing of bacteria in biofilms are analyzed.

Clonal dissemination of CTX-M-5-producing nosocomial strains of Salmonella Typhimurium in Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan

In this paper, the evidence of broad geographic dissemination of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium strains belonging to a single genetic lineage is presented. The isolates described possess resistance to oxiiminocephalosporines due to …

Antimicrobial Stewardship as a Renascence of the ‘Golden Age’ of Antibiotics

Infections caused by resistant microorganisms are of particular concern for both healthcare providers and public health authorities due to associated significant social and economic losses. Improper use of antimicrobial agents, selective pressure, …

Escherichia coli as a Nosocomial Pathogen in ICUs

Over the last years, Gram-negative bacilli are the leading cause of nosocomial infections in different part of the world. Intensive care units (ICUs) differ from other units by continuous healthcare worker-to-patient contacts, large number of …
