Antimicrobial Resistance of Bacteria in Biofilms

Different mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance development in biofilm bacteria are reviewed in the article. Practical approaches to the susceptibility testing of bacteria in biofilms are analyzed.

Clonal dissemination of CTX-M-5-producing nosocomial strains of Salmonella Typhimurium in Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan

In this paper, the evidence of broad geographic dissemination of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium strains belonging to a single genetic lineage is presented. The isolates described possess resistance to oxiiminocephalosporines due to …

Antimicrobial Stewardship as a Renascence of the ‘Golden Age’ of Antibiotics

Infections caused by resistant microorganisms are of particular concern for both healthcare providers and public health authorities due to associated significant social and economic losses. Improper use of antimicrobial agents, selective pressure, …

Escherichia coli as a Nosocomial Pathogen in ICUs

Over the last years, Gram-negative bacilli are the leading cause of nosocomial infections in different part of the world. Intensive care units (ICUs) differ from other units by continuous healthcare worker-to-patient contacts, large number of …

Phenotypic and Genotypic Characteristics of Pneumococci Isolated from Patients with Pneumococcal Meningitis

Antimicrobial susceptibility, serotype distribution, and multilocus sequence types of Streptococcus pneumoniae isolated from the patients with meningitis were determined. We tested a total of 84 isolates which have been obtained in Moscow during …

Antimicrobial Resistance of Gram-negative Bacteria Isolated from Biopsy Samples in Patients with Ulcerative Colitis

Objective. To investigate spectrum and antimicrobial susceptibility of colonic microorganisms isolated from biopsy samples in patients with ulcerative colitis. Materials and Methods. A total of 34 patients with ulcerative colitis (19 to 75 years of age) treated in proctology unit (Surgery Clinic of Samara State Medical University) during the 2009–2010 were examined in this study. Results. A total of 70 gram-negative isolates were obtained, of which Enterobacteriaceae were the most predominant pathogens.

Antimicrobial Resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae in Russia over the 1999–2009: Results of Multicenter Prospective Study PEHASus

Objective. To assess antimicrobial resistance and its trends among Streptococcus pneumoniae in different regions of Russia over the 1999-2009. Materials and Methods. A total of 2419 S. pneumoniae strains from different cities of Central, NorthWestern, Southern, Volga, Ural, Siberia, Far-Eastern regions of Russia were included into the study over the period from 1999 to 2009. Susceptibility to 23 antimicrobials was determined using microdilution method according to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines.

Daptomycin – the Review of Pharmacological, Clinical and Microbiological Characteristics

Daptomycin is the first approved member of a cyclic lipopeptides class of antibiotics with anti-Gram(+) activity. In contrast to majority of other antimicrobials daptomycin has rapid bactericidal activity against not only rapidly growing, but also …

Resistance Trends and Epidemiology of Acinetobacter Infections in Russia

In vitro activity of 13 antimicrobials (amikacin, cefepime, cefoperazone, cefoperazone/sulbactam, cefotaxime, ceftazidime, ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, imipenem, levofloxacin, meropenem, piperacillin, piperacillin/tazobactam) against 464 Acinetobacter …

Antimicrobial Resistance of Nosocomial Staphylococci Isolated from Burn Center Patients in 2002–2008

A total of 1375 clinical strains of staphylococci isolated from patients in burn units during the 2002–2008 were tested to detect antimicrobial resistance changes during this period. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed by …
