Abstract

Efficacy of regional standard of care «CommunityAcquired Pneumonia» and Sverdlovsk regional healthcare program «Intensive Care» were assessed. This paper presents results of retrospective analysis of ICU hospitalizations for severe community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) during the 2000–2004 in Ekaterinburg. CAP appeared to be the leading cause of death among respiratory diseases and significant medical and social problem. Hospital mortality was accounts for 37.4% of patients with CAP only. Implementation of above-mentioned regulatory documents into clinical practice resulted in 2-fold increase in appropriateness of prescribing antimicrobials in the treatment of severe CAP. During the 4-year period overall hospital mortality rate decreased by 20% and mortality rate in ICUs by 1.3 times. Third generation cephalosporins became the most frequently administered antimicrobials in the treatment of severe CAP.
