Rapid syndromic approach to diagnosis of bacteremia – results of the first experience

Objective. To describe results of the first experience of using a syndromic approach to the diagnosis of bacteremia using multiplex panels for real-time polymerase chain reaction (real-time PCR). Materials and Methods. The prospective study included 10 consecutive positive blood cultures obtained from 10 patients in the intensive care unit after cardiac surgery. Hemocultures were carried out in BacT/ ALERT FA Plus vials using a BacT/ALERT 3D 120 incubator (bioMérieux, France).

Etiology of community-acquired pneumonia in the military personnel

Objective. To assess the etiology of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in the army recruits using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay. Materials and Methods. Sputum, blood, bronchoalveolar lavage samples and oropharyngeal swabs collected from 255 hospitalized army recruits with radiographically confirmed diagnosis of CAP were tested by PCR assay. The comparator group included 270 otherwise healthy recruits. Detection of Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzaе, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydophila pneumoniae, Chlamydophila psittaci, Legionella pneumophila, adenoviruses, Herpes simplex virus I/II, cytomegalovirus was performed by PCR using commercial AmpliSens kits and GenPak DNA PCR test.

Real-Time PCR for the Diagnosis of Tick-Born Infections

Overall 842 cases of admission due to tick bites in Irkutsk area during 2014 were analyzed. Detection of DNA/RNA of the tick-born encephalitis virus, Lyme borreliosis, monocytic ehrlichiosisand granulocyticanaplasmosis in the human serum and in the …

Use of PCR for Diagnosis of Legionella Infection in Hematological Patients

Objective. To assess efficacy of PCR for detection of Legionella in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid obtained from hematological patients with pneumonia and acute respiratory failure. Materials and Methods. A total of 79 BAL samples collected from the hospitalized hematological patients with pneumonia and acute respiratory failure (during the 2011–2014) were analyzed using PCR. All BAL samples have been tested for legionellosis by culture immediately after collection, and then stored at –70 °C.

Development of Chlamydial Arthritis Model in Rats

Objective. To develop and characterize experimental model of chlamydial arthritis in rats. Materials and Methods. Wistar male rats received an intra-articular injection of 0.15–0.20 ml of purified elementary bodies of Chlamydophila (Chlamydia) trachomatis L2/Bu-434 or Chlamydophila (Chlamydia) muridarum Nigg. Animals were divided into two groups: young rats (body weight: 350-380 g) and adult rats (body weight: 450–500 g). Results. No changes in the affected joints were observed in rats infected with C.

PCR-based Identification and Serotyping of Russian Streptococcus pneumoniae Strains

The techniques for PCR-based identification and serotyping of Streptococcus pneumoniae were optimized for using in Russian epidemiologic situation. One hundred and thirteen strains isolated from children under 5 years of age in 15 Russian cities were …

New Methods for Identification of Listeria monocytogenes

Identification of Listeria monocytogenes in clinical specimens is often complicated because of morphological and biochemical properties of this pathogen. In present article the traditional bacteriological methods of identification of L.monocytogenes …
