Methodological approaches to fluoroquinolone susceptibility testing of Salmonella

Objective. To evaluate effectiveness of the various approaches to fluoroquinolone susceptibility testing of Salmonella, including S. typhi, taking into account molecular resistance mechanisms. Materials and Methods. The MIC values of ciprofloxacin were compared with the inhibition zone for pefloxacin disc, 5 mg (310 isolates) and nalidixic acid, 30 mg (420 isolates). MIC of ciprofloxacin was determined by gradient diffusion test and broth microdilution method. Muller – Hinton agar and Muller – Hinton broth, antibiotic discs and MICE-tests (Oxoid, UK) were used.

Fluoroquinolone use restrictions in patients with uncomplicated infections and safety issues

n May 2016, US FDA advised to restrict fluoroquinolones use in patients with acute sinusitis, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, and uncomplicated urinary tract infections. The reason for this decision was the new safety data obtained during …

Fluoroquinolones efficacy in acute sinusitis, acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis and uncomplicated urinary tract infections

In May 2016 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved changes to the labels of fluoroquinolone drugs for systemic use and advised to restrict their prescribing for the treatment of acute sinusitis, uncomplicated urinary tract infections …

Evaluation of Prevalence of Classical Fluoroquinolone Resistance Mechanisms in Chlamydia trachomatis Due to Mutations in the Topoisomerase Genes

Until now, mutational resistance to fluoroquinolones (FQs) that represent a second-line treatment option for chlamydial infections after macrolides and tetrxacyclines has not been described in clinical isolates of C. trachomatis. However, a …

Antibacterial Therapy of Infectious Exacerbations of Chronic Bronchitis: from Pathogen Eradication to Long-Term Relapse-Free Period

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic illness that is characterized by recurring exacerbations. Exacerbations lead to the progression of the disease with development of respiratory failure, decreasing of the quality of life of the …

Antimicrobial Resistance among Bacterial Pathogens Causing Ocular Infections in Russia

Objective. To determine bacterial pathogens causing ocular infections and their antimicrobial susceptibility patterns. Materials and Methods. This prospective microbiological study included a total of 235 isolates of aerobic microorganisms obtained from 235 patients in 10 Russian regions. Susceptibility to the following antimicrobials (ampicillin, amoxicillin, amoxicillin/clavulanate, oxacillin, penicillin, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, ofloxacin, norfloxacin, tobramycin, gentamicin, chloramphenicol, polymyxin B, tetracycline, and erythromycin) was determined using serial dilution method. Results. The most predominant pathogens in ocular infections were S.

Fluoroquinolone Resistance of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Novosibirsk Region: Results of Population-Based Study

Objective. Objectives. To study incidence and changes of fluoroquinolone resistance among Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Novosibirsk region, and to determine fluoroquinolone contribution to drug resistance selection in M. tuberculosis population. Materials and Methods. A total of 344 clinical isolates of M. tuberculosis obtained from patients with newly diagnosed tuberculosis during the periods of 2000–2002 and 2006–2010 were tested for susceptibility to fluoroquinolones. This study included 141 isolates susceptible to first-line drugs and 83 isolates resistant to isoniazid and rifampicin (multi-drug resistance [MDR]), and 120 isolates resistant to one or more anti-TB drugs, but without MDR.

Levofloxacin Efficacy – the Success Predictors

Objective. Aim. To evaluate the comparable solubility of original levofloxacin (Tavanic, Sanofi–Aventis, France) and its generics. Materials and Methods. The resolution kinetics of the original drug and two generics was studied in different рН levels. The choice of рН levels was done according to the US pharmacopeia. Results. The original levofloxacin has shown the stable parameters important for bioavailability independently from рН level. At the same time resolution kinetics of two generic products significantly varied depending on рН.

Ciprofloxacin in Current Clinical Practice

Ciprofloxacin is the most known member of second generation quinolones, which is more active against gram-negative microorganisms and has broad antimicrobial spectrum compared to first generation quinolones. This article presents the main indications …

Current Aspects of Antibiotic Choice in the Treatment of Acute Uncomplicated Cystitis

Acute uncomplicated cystitis is one of the most prevalent community-acquired infections in urological practice. One of the crucial moments in the therapy of urinary tract infections is the administration of antibacterial drugs. The following groups …
