Abstract

The paper presents the results of molecular analysis of epidemic strains of influenza A in different years and within subtypes H1 and H3, manifesting different sensitivity to rimantadine. Analysis was performed on the influenza A virus M2 protein gene sequence. In order to detect mutations in the viral genome, analysis was performed on 15 strains of subtype A(H3N2) and 16 strains of subtype A(H1N1), isolated at the Russian Federation in 1995–2007. Analysis of registered nucleotide sequences of the M2 protein enabled to identify mutations confering resistance to rimantadine. Apart from known mutations, additional mutations were detected for each subtype which may be considered as new markers for the identification of rimantadine-resistant strains.
