The present guidelines for clinical practice suggest preferable approaches to the problem of antibacterial therapy of acute uncomplicated cystitis and pyelonephritis in adults. Classification of urinary tract infections, risk factors, current data on aetiology and antimicrobial resistance of uropathogens are presented. The following questions are discussed in detail: selection of antibacterial agents, route of administration, dosage and duration of therapy, antibacterial prophylactics. Comparative characteristics of the antimicrobials commonly used for this indication are given. These guidelines are designed for physicians, urologists, gynecologists and clinical pharmacologists.
