Abstract

Fournier’s gangrene is a relatively rare disease and comprises specific form of necrotizing fasciitis. This review presents a history of this disease. Several controversial issues, such as etiology, which is polymicrobial and to some extent depends on source of infection (e.g. anorectal area, urogenital tract, skin infection), are described in detail. Predisposing factors, pathogenesis, and typical clinical course of the disease as well as diagnosis are considered. The focus on multimodality treatment consisting of surgery and antimicrobial therapy that has no approved stadards to date.
